Oil Rig Security

Location: The North Sea

Client: Major Oil Producer

Outline: Decommissioning a giant oil rig is always a risky operation. Delays and accidents can damage the environment, a client’s reputation and balance sheet. Our client was determined to avoid the type of incidents experienced by other major oil companies when decommissioning oil rigs.

We provided our client with a broad range of services including risk assessment and analysis, risk mitigation, contingency planning and emergency response.

Initial assessment and risk analysis, detailed information gathering and security plans preceded operations. Our intelligence on possible threats from environmental action groups, terrorists and other physical threats led to the drawing up of strategic plans covering business reputation risk, mitigating terrorist and activist actions, operational liaison with law enforcement and security services, together with detailed contingency plans.

We led thought and process by involving a leading environmental group at an early stage, actively seeking their views. It was, after all, in everyone’s interest that the operation be conducted safely, both in terms of the environment and all personnel.

With the risk management plans in place, our operational management team coordinated with the local police, security services, contractors and client. In addition, we created a secure maritime exclusion zone around the rig thereby allowing engineers to work in safety.

Outcome: The rig was successfully towed to its decommissioning site, with no business interruption or reputation impacts.
