Aviation Security at Baghdad International Airport

Location: Baghdad Airport

Client: Government

Date: 2003 - 2008

Outline: Early in 2003, we were asked to provide security assessments for major airports throughout Iraq. By 2004, we were providing security services and operations for Baghdad International Airport to ensure safe transportation services for people and commercial cargo in one of the world’s most dangerous aviation security environments.

We created a highly secure perimeter around this enormous facility with all points of entry and exit manned by our personnel 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Once inside the perimeter, our specially trained personnel managed the entire operation of the terminal from ground and baggage screening and handling, security checks for all outbound and inbound passengers as well as providing security of aircraft, fuel and other facilities.

A key part of our plan included the training, development and mentoring of local Iraqi personnel. Since 2004, the project employed and trained hundreds of Iraqi’s to international standards and, towards the end of the project, it was these locals who made up the majority of the workforce.

Outcome: Despite the obvious dangers, Baghdad International Airport operated successfully and securely under the watch of GLOBAL personnel. During our tenure, inbound and outbound flights increased from just a few each week to more than 40 per day and airport security, operations and trained personnel operated in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
